Chapter 48
Hades
“We’re done here,” I announced before taking Persephone’s hand and guiding her out of the room. There were shouts from the front of the room, demanding we remain, but I ignored them. I seriously doubted anyone from the council was going to try to stop us. Rainer was arguing with the council when the door closed behind us. He’d keep them busy until we were out of the building.
“What are you doing?” Persephone asked, tugging at my hand to get me to stop.
“Leaving,” I replied.
“Are you angry?” she asked. “I’m sorry they were so mean to you.”
“Mean to me?” I asked with a bark of laughter. “I had a demon attempt to slice off one of my wings when I tried to take his contraband sword away earlier today. From my perspective, no one in that room was a threat to me, so I don’t give a fuck what they say about me. Some of those witches pissed me off because they were rude to you. They have no right to talk about you like you’re nothing more than a broodmare. How the fuck do they even know if we plan to have children? You called them on their bullshit. It’s a good thing you told them off before I lost my temper.”
“You seem to have lost your temper,” she pointed out. “Need I remind you that you just dragged me out of the room?”
I backed her against the wall, ignoring the witches moving around us. We’d already put on a show for the council, so I didn’t think it mattered much if we put on another. When her back was pressed against the wall, I leaned in closer and bit down gently on her earlobe before whispering, “Hearing you use profanity turned me on. You were hot as fuck when you stood up to that pompous witch on the council.”
“I was?” she asked in a breathy voice.
“Yes,” I replied as my hands moved to her hips. “I need to get you out of here now.”
“But we can’t leave Rainer without a car.” She didn’t sound convinced of her own argument. “How will he get back?”
Fallen angels born outside of Heaven, such as Rainer, couldn’t make their wings appear outside the demon realm, so he needed the SUV to return home. I didn’t have the same limitation.
“We’ll fly.” I stepped back and held out a hand to her.
“But Rainer,” she replied helplessly as she placed her hand in mine. “He’ll be worried.”
“He knows we won’t be here when he leaves the meeting,” I assured her. If he hadn’t figured it out, he’d hear about it soon enough. As soon as I flew from the parking area with Persephone in my arms, word would spread throughout the building.
She nodded and allowed me to lead her out to the parking lot.
“Are you ready?” I asked.
“Yes,” she replied excitedly. The pure joy on her face nearly took my breath away. She was incredible.
